Nominated for an Oscar (for animation)
This movie is not going to be for everyone. It’s a mostly black and white animated French film. That right there is enough to put most people off. Add in the fact that it is about growing up in Tehran in the late 70’sand 80’s and even more people are going to lost interest. That being said, I enjoyed this movie. The animation is stark, but still beautiful. The first half of the movie is of a little girl living in Tehran while the revolution takes place and its aftermath. She is an
exuberant active girl, who wants to play, even while terrible things are going on around her. The second half of the movie was not as enjoyable for me. It is the story of the same girl as she becomes and angry depressed teen living on her own(she is living in Vienna) in a country that is foreign to her (as though being a teen wasn’t enough to make her angry and depressed). It a lovely movie, with wonderful characters who make tough choices. But as this is based on a autobiography, it has no clear ending. She just grows up and moves away, although maybe that is all any of us do once we reach adulthood.
